What Is the Mysimba® Tablets Programme?

Our Mysimba® Tablets Programme is a clinically supervised weight management service combining prescription treatment, regular monitoring, lifestyle guidance and ongoing professional support.

Mysimba® is a prescription-only weight loss medicine containing two active ingredients, naltrexone and bupropion. These ingredients work together on areas of the brain involved in appetite, eating behaviour and food cravings.

The treatment is taken as tablets and may provide an alternative for eligible adults who do not want to use weight loss injections. Mysimba® should be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Many people find it difficult to lose weight despite trying different diets, exercise plans and lifestyle changes. Weight can be influenced by appetite, hormones, metabolism, stress, sleep, eating behaviour and underlying health conditions.

Before Mysimba® can be prescribed, you will complete a clinical consultation. This allows our healthcare team to review your medical history, current medicines, blood pressure, BMI, previous treatments and overall health.

Your treatment plan will be based on your individual circumstances, weight loss goals and clinical assessment. Additional health checks or blood tests may be recommended where clinically appropriate.

Why Is Maintaining a Healthy Weight Important?

Maintaining a healthy weight is about more than appearance. Carrying excess weight can affect your energy, confidence, mobility and overall health and wellbeing.

Being overweight or living with obesity may increase the risk of:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease and stroke
  • High cholesterol
  • Sleep apnoea
  • Joint pain and reduced mobility
  • Reduced energy levels and fatigue

Even modest weight loss may provide meaningful health benefits. Losing approximately 5–10% of your starting body weight may help improve blood pressure, blood sugar control, mobility, energy levels and overall wellbeing.

Why Can Weight Loss Be Difficult?

Many people lose weight initially but find it difficult to maintain their results. Successful weight management involves more than willpower alone. Appetite, food cravings, emotional eating, metabolism, stress and underlying health conditions can all influence body weight.

Common challenges include:

  • Persistent hunger and food cravings
  • Difficulty controlling portion sizes
  • Emotional or habitual eating
  • Eating in response to stress or boredom
  • Busy lifestyles and limited time
  • Regaining weight after dieting

A clinically supervised programme can provide the structure and professional support needed to address these barriers. Where appropriate, Mysimba® may be used alongside lifestyle guidance and regular monitoring to support sustainable progress.

How Do Mysimba® Tablets Work?

Mysimba® contains naltrexone and bupropion. These active ingredients work together on areas of the brain involved in controlling appetite, eating behaviour and the reward associated with food.

Mysimba® may help to:

  • Reduce appetite and hunger
  • Reduce food cravings
  • Support better control over eating
  • Make it easier to maintain a reduced-calorie diet
  • Support weight loss and long-term weight management

Mysimba® does not work in the same way as GLP-1 weight loss medicines such as Wegovy® or Mounjaro®. It does not contain semaglutide or tirzepatide and is not an injectable treatment.

The tablets should be used alongside a balanced, reduced-calorie diet, increased physical activity and ongoing clinical support.

Treatment suitability will be assessed during your consultation and review of your health information.

How Do I Take Mysimba® Tablets?

Mysimba® is supplied as prolonged-release tablets. Treatment usually begins with one tablet in the morning, with the dose gradually increased over four weeks.

  • Take the tablets with food.
  • Swallow each tablet whole with water.
  • Do not cut, crush or chew the tablets.
  • Take the tablets exactly as instructed by your prescriber.
  • Do not take more than the prescribed dose.

Crushing, cutting or chewing the tablets may affect their prolonged-release properties and increase the risk of side effects.

Your clinician will explain exactly how and when to take your treatment.

Mysimba® Tablet Dose Schedule

The Mysimba® dose is normally increased gradually over the first four weeks. This allows your body to adjust to the medicine and helps your clinician assess how well you tolerate treatment.

  • Week 1: One tablet in the morning.
  • Week 2: One tablet in the morning and one tablet in the evening.
  • Week 3: Two tablets in the morning and one tablet in the evening.
  • Week 4 onwards: Two tablets in the morning and two tablets in the evening.

Each Mysimba® prolonged-release tablet contains 8 mg of naltrexone hydrochloride and 90 mg of bupropion hydrochloride.

The usual maximum daily dose is four tablets: two tablets in the morning and two tablets in the evening. You should not exceed this dose.

Your clinician may adjust or stop treatment depending on your response, side effects, blood pressure, medical history and overall suitability.

Ongoing Support Throughout Your Weight Loss Journey

Successful weight management is about more than achieving short-term results. Our programme includes regular follow-up reviews, clinical monitoring and continued support to help you maintain your progress.

During your programme, we will monitor your weight, blood pressure, treatment response, side effects and general wellbeing. Your treatment plan may be adjusted where clinically appropriate.

Your response to treatment will normally be reviewed after approximately 16 weeks. Mysimba® may be stopped if you have not lost at least 5% of your starting body weight or if the treatment is not considered safe or suitable to continue.

Additional health checks or blood tests may be recommended depending on your medical history and treatment plan. Additional charges may apply.

Whether you have questions about taking your tablets, managing side effects, nutrition, activity or your next steps, our healthcare team will be available to support you.

Could You Benefit From Mysimba® Tablets?

Mysimba® tablets may be suitable for adults who:

  • Have a BMI of 30 or above.
  • Have a BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related health condition.
  • Have struggled to lose weight through healthy eating and physical activity alone.
  • Frequently regain weight after dieting.
  • Experience persistent hunger or food cravings.
  • Find it difficult to manage portion sizes or eating habits.
  • Have a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or Type 2 diabetes.
  • Would prefer a tablet-based treatment rather than an injection.
  • Would like to find out whether prescription weight loss treatment is suitable.

Eligibility is not based on BMI alone. Your clinician must also assess your medical history, current medicines, blood pressure, previous treatments and general health before prescribing Mysimba®.

Mysimba® Weight Loss Treatment

Mysimba® is a prescription-only weight management treatment containing naltrexone and bupropion. It is supplied as prolonged-release tablets and does not require injections or needles.

The treatment may help reduce appetite, manage food cravings and improve control over eating. This can make it easier to reduce calorie intake and maintain healthier habits.

Potential benefits may include:

  • A needle-free tablet treatment
  • Reduced appetite and food cravings
  • Improved control over eating habits
  • Support for weight loss and weight maintenance
  • Personalised clinical monitoring and ongoing support

Results vary between patients and cannot be guaranteed. Treatment works best when combined with healthy eating, regular physical activity and sustainable lifestyle changes.

Are Mysimba® Tablets Right for Me?

Mysimba® may be an appropriate option for eligible adults who want clinically supervised weight management support without using an injectable medicine.

Following your consultation and health assessment, our clinical team will determine whether Mysimba® is suitable based on your BMI, blood pressure, medical history, current medicines, overall health and individual goals.

Mysimba® is not suitable for everyone. It may be unsuitable for people with uncontrolled high blood pressure, a history of seizures, certain eating disorders, severe liver or kidney problems, bipolar disorder or those taking opioid medicines.

Your Health and Safety Come First

Our focus is not simply on helping you lose weight. We are committed to supporting your overall health and wellbeing through careful assessments, regular monitoring and personalised clinical care throughout your programme.

You must tell your clinician about all health conditions, medicines and supplements before starting treatment. Mysimba® is not suitable for everyone and should only be taken when prescribed following an appropriate clinical assessment.

It is particularly important to tell your clinician if you take opioid painkillers, opioid-containing cough medicines, treatments for opioid dependence, antidepressants or medicines that may increase the risk of seizures.

Take Mysimba® with food and swallow each tablet whole with water. Do not cut, crush or chew the tablets. Follow the dose schedule provided by your prescriber.

Treatment normally begins with one tablet each morning. The dose is gradually increased over four weeks to a usual maximum of two tablets in the morning and two tablets in the evening.

8. Can I crush or split Mysimba® tablets?

No. Mysimba® tablets should be swallowed whole. Cutting, crushing or chewing them may affect how the prolonged-release medicine is absorbed and could increase the risk of side effects.

Results vary between individuals. Mysimba® can support clinically meaningful weight loss when taken consistently alongside a reduced-calorie diet, increased physical activity and ongoing professional support. Individual results cannot be guaranteed.

10. How quickly will I notice results?

11. What happens if Mysimba® does not work?

Your treatment will normally be reviewed after approximately 16 weeks. Your clinician may recommend stopping Mysimba® if you have not lost at least 5% of your starting body weight or if continuing treatment is not considered appropriate.

12. Who is eligible for Mysimba®?

15. Will my blood pressure be checked?

Yes. Mysimba® can affect blood pressure and heart rate, so your blood pressure should be assessed before treatment and monitored while you are taking it.

16. Do I need blood tests before starting?

Blood tests are not required for every patient but may be recommended depending on your medical history, current medicines and clinical assessment.

17. What are the most common side effects?

Common side effects may include nausea, constipation, vomiting, headache, dizziness, dry mouth, difficulty sleeping and changes in appetite. Side effects may be more noticeable when treatment begins or the dose is increased.

18. How can I manage nausea?

Taking Mysimba® with food, eating smaller meals and avoiding rich or fatty foods may help. Contact our clinical team if nausea or vomiting is severe, persistent or affecting your ability to eat and drink.

19. Can Mysimba® affect sleep?

Difficulty sleeping can occur in some patients. Take your doses at the times recommended by your prescriber and speak to our clinical team if sleep problems are persistent.

20. Can Mysimba® affect my mood?

Bupropion affects chemicals in the brain and may cause mood or behavioural changes in some people. Contact your clinician promptly if you experience significant changes in mood, agitation, anxiety, unusual behaviour or thoughts of harming yourself.

21. Can Mysimba® increase blood pressure?

Mysimba® may increase blood pressure or heart rate in some patients. Your blood pressure should be checked before treatment and monitored throughout the programme.

22. Can I take Mysimba® if I have high blood pressure?

People with well-controlled high blood pressure may sometimes be suitable following a clinical assessment. Mysimba® must not be used if your blood pressure is uncontrolled.

23. Can I take Mysimba® if I have epilepsy or a history of seizures?

No. Mysimba® is generally unsuitable for people with a current seizure disorder or a history of seizures because bupropion can increase the risk of a seizure.

24. Can I take Mysimba® with opioid painkillers?

Mysimba® must not normally be taken with opioid medicines because naltrexone blocks the effects of opioids. This includes some strong painkillers, opioid-containing cough medicines and treatments used for opioid dependence.

25. What if I need an operation or strong pain relief?

Tell your doctor, surgeon, dentist or anaesthetist that you take Mysimba®. Naltrexone can prevent opioid painkillers from working normally, so your treatment may need to be stopped in advance under medical supervision.

26. Can I take Mysimba® with antidepressants?

Mysimba® can interact with certain antidepressants and other medicines that affect the brain. Tell your clinician about every prescription medicine, over-the-counter treatment and supplement you use.

27. Can I drink alcohol while taking Mysimba®?

Alcohol may increase the risk of side effects, including seizures and changes in mood or behaviour. Discuss your alcohol intake with your clinician and follow the advice provided with your treatment.

28. What happens if I miss a dose?

Skip the missed dose and take your next scheduled dose at the usual time. Do not take additional tablets to make up for a missed dose.

No. Mysimba® should not be used during pregnancy. Tell your clinician if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or are planning a pregnancy.

30. Can I take Mysimba® while breastfeeding?

Mysimba® should not normally be used while breastfeeding. Your clinician can discuss alternative weight management options with you.

Weight regain can occur after stopping any weight management medicine, particularly if appetite increases and lifestyle changes are not maintained. Our programme focuses on helping you develop sustainable habits to support long-term weight management.

33. What lifestyle changes should I make?

Mysimba® works best alongside a balanced, reduced-calorie diet, regular physical activity, good sleep and sustainable eating habits. Our team will provide guidance to help you make realistic long-term changes.

Prices depend on the prescribed treatment, consultations and any additional health checks or blood tests that may be required. Complete the online consultation for current pricing and treatment information.
